SafePlace Service
Through the SafePlace service, West Midlands Anti Slavery Network provides emergency accommodation to adult male victims of modern slavery in the pre-National Referral Mechanism (NRM) space.
West Midlands Anti Slavery Network has designed this service as there is minimal support for male victims of modern slavery in the pre-NRM space, and often they can be left to navigate a complex system without continual and trauma informed support.
What does SafePlace offer?
The accomodation is a safe place for victims/survivors to reflect and heal after exploitation. The programme is designed for victims/survivors in the pre-National Referral Mechanism (NRM) space and for individuals who are unsure if they want to be referred into the NRM. Victims cannot have a current NRM in place. The accomodation is only short term and until the victim/survivor can be transitioned into longer term accomdation.
Provides victims of modern slavery with:
- Semi-supported accommodation (Mon to Fri 9 am-5 pm support)
- Subsistence payments for food and travel, clothing and food access
- Assistance to appropriate medical and health services and legal services
- Access to translating and intrepreting services
- Advice and guidance in relation to their rights and entitlements
- Staff liaison with First Responders if the victim wishes to enter the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), and support completing the NRM referrral form
- Referrals and signposting to alternative community services if the victim does not wish to enter the NRM but identifies as a survivor of modern slavery
Who can be referred to SafePlace?
This programme is for adult male victims of modern slavery in the West Midlands and Warwickshire region, however female adult victims of modern slavery can be referred and will be considered on a case to case basis.
Police Checks are required to support an initial safety risk assessment checks prior to referral. High risk victims may not be accepted into SafePlace. Referrals may not be accepted if the accomodation is at capacity.
Who can make a referral?
West Midlands Police, Warwickshire Police, Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) or Birmingham City Council may refer a victim to SafePlace if they suspect that a person may have been a victim of modern slavery and does not have a current NRM in place. If you do not belong to these organisations you can always contact us with a potential referral and we can discuss options and pathways for support.
