Independent Modern Slavery Advocate (IMSA)

Independent Modern Slavery Advocate (IMSA)

West Midlands Anti Slavery Network currently employs three Independent Modern Slavery Advocates (IMSAs) in the West Midlands and one IMSA in Warwickshire.

IMSAs play a crucial role in bridging gaps within this domain by forging partnerships on the ground. They concentrate on cultivating robust relationships with the Police, Local Authorities and third sector organisations.

IMSAs offer various services including direct victim support, delivering training packages on Modern Slavery and contact person for professionals to get technical advice in the Modern Slavery remit.

Direct outreach support to victims

IMSAs tailor outreach support for potential victims/survivors to their needs.

Outreach activities include but are not limited to:

  • Setting up food bank vouchers
  • Assisting victims with homelessness applications to local authority where appropriate
  • Helping victims set up Universal Credit or other support applications
  • Referring victims to appropriate health care, mental health and drug addiction support services
  • Helping victims link in with the Modern Slavery Victim Care Contract when needed
  • Advocating for the victim where appropriate and needed.
Build Awareness and Deliver Training

IMSAs provide training and awareness packages to organisations whose staff may encounter victims of Modern Slavery.

These training sessions focus on recognising potential victims and outlining steps to secure support for them.

IMSAs are currently training local authorities, police, third sector organisations, educational institutions and the NHS.

Provide professional support

IMSAs serve as points of contact for professionals seeking guidance, assistance, or clarification on modern slavery issues. They offer technical advice, including information on available support for victims and guidance on submitting a referral under the National Referral Mechanism (NRM).

IMSAs also accompany professionals during visits to potential victims, including police operations, aiding in the identification and support processes.

If you are interested in any of the IMSAs services please contact the team
